Buildings in general are energy hogs. Building operations account for 30 per cent of global final energy consumption and 26 per cent of global energy-related emissions. Fortunately, minimum performance standards and building energy codes are increasing, and the use of efficient and renewable buildings technologies is accelerating.

Now the building sector must respond in innovative ways. “In addition to continuously improving performance and efficiency, building managers are increasingly expected to minimise the environmental footprint of their real estate portfolio,” he explains.

Smart algorithms automate and optimise building systems

Piscada delivers a cutting-edge building management system (BMS) for commercial building portfolios. Delivered as Software as a Service (SaaS), the system is an end-to-end solution for building automation and optimisation.

The cloud-based digital platform collects all relevant data from a portfolio of buildings and then controls all the systems for indoor climate, energy efficiency and environmental impact. The data and control points are structured in a data model, enabling the use of AI and smart algorithms.

“Just as ChatGPT has created a Large Language Model, Piscada has created a Large Building Model,” states Pedersen.

“Unlike bespoke solutions which require mapping and structuring of sensors and infrastructure, Piscada's proprietary semantics engine automatically recognises sources and builds the appropriate data model for each building,” he adds.

These data models can serve as the basis for future innovations in the field.

The solution employs historical and real-time data to improve energy performance. Using sophisticated algorithms and dashboards, managers are able to track and benchmark performance towards efficiency goals—and make data-driven decisions.

The result is lower operating costs, less energy consumption and less environmental impact, while maintaining the optimal indoor climate.

“We have done the hard part of connecting the buildings and controlling their systems. Today an operator analyses the data for inefficiencies, such as high AC use outside of office hours, and makes energy-efficient changes. Eventually the algorithms will do this automatically,” explains Pedersen.

In addition, the solution prevents data silos and eliminates the need to collect the same information multiple times.

High demand for proptech to decarbonise buildings

The global proptech market is projected to increase from USD 33.8 billion in 2023 to USD 72.4 billion in 2030. This growth will be fuelled in part by broader and stricter regulations on energy efficiency in buildings. The EU, for example, recently strengthened the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) to bolster its efforts to decarbonise the building stock.

Piscada is the leading cloud-based BMS provider in Norway, where some 2 000 industrial buildings and facilities have streamlined their operations with Piscada’s software. The company also has partners and customers in Germany and the Netherlands and aims for further international expansion.

As a company, Piscada offers next-generation cloud-based systems for various industries. Its core competencies are software development, industrial automation and IT, and analytics and optimisation. Today Piscada also delivers an end-to-end feeding solution for sea-based aquaculture.

“Our platform is now ready for adoption in other industries as well,” concludes Pedersen.
